Bitter Fruit

[Verse 1 — warm guitar, restless bass]
I grafted peaches onto a plum
Bent all the branches toward your sun
I brought you baskets, ripe and sweet
You held one bitter fruit up to me

[Pre-Chorus — ascending harmony]
My roots go deep in borrowed ground
The wild seeds in me make no sound

[Chorus — big melodic hook]
Every harvest, one complaint
Every season, one more change
I fed your summer with my spring
And never tasted anything
I want to clear this orchard flat
Let strange new forests take it back
But nests are woven in these trees
And wings would fall along with me
(Along with me, along with me)

[Verse 2 — polyrhythmic drums]
You ask for roses after frost
I tally up the summers lost

[Bridge — hushed]
Can roots keep growing somewhere new
Without tearing what grew here too?

[Outro — layered voices]
I leave one branch untouched tonight
A little fruit that's mine to bite
