Let the World Come Close to

[Verse 1]
You hold the gate when my hands are full
You notice the rain on a stranger’s sleeve
A tired cashier meets your eyes
And for a second, gets to breathe

[Pre-Chorus]
We pass each other every day
With whole lives hidden in our faces
One gentle word can change the weight
Of all the miles between our places

[Chorus]
Let the world come close to you
Meet each life with something kind
There’s enough hurt passing through
Don’t add more to what we find
If you can lift a little weight
If you can let somebody through
Let the world come close to you
And let your love reach outward too

[Verse 2]
You leave the last seat for the woman with the cane
You let the child explain the whole long game
You learn the name the new kid chose
And use it like it matters—because it does

[Pre-Chorus]
No one is a passing face
No one’s life is small or spare
A little patience makes a place
Where someone knows that you are there

[Chorus]
Let the world come close to you
Meet each life with something kind
There’s enough hurt passing through
Don’t add more to what we find
If you can lift a little weight
If you can let somebody through
Let the world come close to you
And let your love reach outward too

[Bridge]
You don’t have to fix the whole wide world
Just stop, look up, and see
The person right in front of you
Is carrying what you cannot see

[Final Chorus]
Let the world come close to you
Meet each life with something kind
There’s enough hurt passing through
Don’t add more to what we find
If you can lift a little weight
If you can let somebody through
Let the world come close to you
And let your love reach outward too
