More Than We Were

[Verse 1]
You knew the names I couldn't say
And stayed until the words came through
We took the long way past the park
With rain still caught inside our shoes
You made me laugh at my own fear
I watched you learn to start again
Some doors swing shut without a fight
Some hands still leave a warmth within

[Pre-Chorus]
We don't have to last forever
To have mattered where we stood
You changed the way I meet the world
I hope I did you good

[Chorus]
You were here, and I was changed
We gave each other room to grow
Even when the road divides
There's a part of you I know
You were here, and joy was real
A thousand small things still remain
Not every bond is built to stay
Some still make us more than we were

[Verse 2]
Your crooked map, my borrowed pen
The late train turning into jokes
The brave first step you took alone
The day I finally let you go
We carried truths between our teeth
Then set them down and let them breathe
No promise needed, no grand end
Just what we were when we were friends

[Pre-Chorus]
We don't have to last forever
To have mattered where we stood
You changed the way I meet the world
I hope I did you good

[Chorus]
You were here, and I was changed
We gave each other room to grow
Even when the road divides
There's a part of you I know
You were here, and joy was real
A thousand small things still remain
Not every bond is built to stay
Some still make us more than we were

[Bridge]
If your name comes up one day
I'll smile before I look away
We were more than passing through
I carry what I learned from you

[Final Chorus]
You were here, and I was changed
We gave each other room to grow
Even when the road divides
There's a part of you I know
You were here, and joy was real
A thousand small things still remain
Not every bond is built to stay
Some still make us more than we were

[Outro]
More than we were
More than we were
