Lifting of the Chain

[Verse 1]
The heavy stone we carry in the dark
A quiet grievance waiting for a spark
We guard the hurt like treasure in a chest
And wonder why our weary hearts won't rest

[Pre-Chorus]
We build the walls so high to keep out pain
And walk alone inside a freezing rain

[Chorus]
Forgiveness is the lifting of the chain
The breaking of the cyclical disdain
It does not say the wound was right or fair
It just lets go of what we're holding there

[Verse 2]
The ledger closes and the debts are cleared
We face the quiet future that we feared
To drop the weapon is to risk the fall
To answer when a gentler voice should call

[Pre-Chorus]
We open hands we clenched into a fist
And step into the morning and the mist

[Chorus]
Forgiveness is the lifting of the chain
The breaking of the cyclical disdain
It does not say the wound was right or fair
It just lets go of what we're holding there

[Bridge]
It takes a quiet courage to forgive
To make a barren place begin to live
The soft release of heavy, binding ties
Beneath the vast and unindicting skies

[Final Chorus]
Forgiveness is the lifting of the chain
The breaking of the cyclical disdain
It does not say the wound was right or fair
It just lets go of what we're holding there
And breathing deep, we learn to start anew
With nothing left to prove or to undo
