The Ground Clear Under You

[Verse 1]
You said the small thing, I heard the old alarm
I turned a kitchen question into cause for harm
Your coat was by the doorway, rain along the hem
I made a map of every fault and walked us through it again

[Pre-Chorus]
I keep laying little charges where your footsteps fall
Then act surprised when silence takes the whole room wall

[Chorus]
I’m still learning how to love you without turning care to fear
How to leave the ground unbroken when I want you near
I can name the things I’m sorry for; I’m trying to do more
Let me meet you at the doorway, not defend the door

[Verse 2]
You saved me half a pear and left the kitchen light
I made a verdict from a pause that lasted through the night
I don’t want every tender hand to have to check the floor
I want to be the place you rest, not one more thing to brace for

[Breakdown]
Slow down, let me see
What I set between you and me

[Final Chorus]
I’m still learning how to love you, leaving room for you to breathe
I can stop and hear the hurt before I make you leave
I can name the things I’m sorry for, then change what I can do
Let me meet you at the doorway, with the ground clear under you
[Outro]
The ground clear under you
