The Worlds of Boom and Bust

[Verse 1]
A baker counts the flour
Then the rent comes due
Stacks of little choices
In a ledger blue

One week the ovens roar
Next week they slow down
A cart of peaches spoiled
On the edge of town

[Pre-Chorus]
Some say it’s all demand
Some say it’s all supply
Some say the crowd gets spooked
And that’s when dreams dry

[Chorus]
Why the boom
Why the bust
Why does the wheel
Turn over us

Boom and bust
Boom and bust
We keep on asking
Who can we trust

[Verse 2]
One old voice says money
Moves the whole parade
When loans get cheap and easy
Fools get overpaid

One old voice says wages
Won’t bend fast enough
So firms cut back their orders
And the winter gets rough

[Pre-Chorus]
Some blame credit burning
Some blame stubborn rules
Some blame crowded markets
And the broken tools

[Chorus]
Why the boom
Why the bust
Why does the wheel
Turn over us

Boom and bust
Boom and bust
We keep on asking
Who can we trust

[Bridge]
Maybe it’s a thousand hands
Pulling in the dark
Maybe it’s one small spark
That sets the whole thing off

Fear can crowd a hallway
Greed can fill a room
A single empty cart wheel
Can echo like a doom

[Final Chorus]
Why the boom
Why the bust
Why does the wheel
Turn over us

Boom and bust
Boom and bust
We keep on asking
Who can we trust

Why the boom
Why the bust
We ride the curve
Then hit the dust
