You Were Almost

[Verse 1]
I loved you in the winter, when the river ran black
You left your Sunday laughter in the cracks of my track
I kept your old excuses like a song I could defend
Now I sing the final measure, let the syllables descend

[Pre-Chorus]
Some names still turn my head
Some futures never came
I can hold them for a moment
Then release them all the same

[Chorus]
Goodbye to the ones I held too tight
Goodbye to the ones I only knew in thought
You were real, you were almost, you were passing through
I’m done asking the past to come true
Goodbye, goodbye—I’m letting go of you

[Verse 2]
There was one I never kissed, though I carried every chance
A whole life in a glance that never learned to dance
You’ll stay a tender maybe, not a wound I have to hide
I bless the road not taken, then I leave it on its side

[Bridge]
For the love that changed me
For the love that stayed a dream
I won’t call either failure
I can loosen what I mean

[Final Chorus]
Goodbye to the ones I held too tight
Goodbye to the ones I only knew in thought
You were real, you were almost, you were passing through
I’m done asking the past to come true
Goodbye, goodbye—I’m letting go of you

[Outro]
You were real, you were almost
Goodbye, goodbye
