A Coat by the Door

[Verse 1]
You left your coat beside the door
And counted coins across the floor
The landlord called; you let it ring
Then bought the coat you said you'd bring

[Pre-Chorus]
A little mercy, paid in cash
A clean excuse, a brighter mask
If doing right means going cold
How much of you can goodness hold?

[Chorus]
I want to be good, I want to be glad
I want to give without losing what I have
If I save my heart, does someone else fall?
If I answer every call, am I nothing at all?

[Verse 2]
You saw the kid outside the store
With wet cuffs and a paper score
You gave him lunch, you missed your train
And cursed the rain, then felt ashamed

[Pre-Chorus]
A little kindness, bruised and real
A private hunger you conceal
The rule says give until it's gone
Your tired hands keep holding on

[Chorus]
I want to be good, I want to be glad
I want to give without losing what I have
If I save my heart, does someone else fall?
If I answer every call, am I nothing at all?

[Bridge]
Maybe the point isn't spotless skin
Maybe the good lets the human in
You can keep a place at your own table
And still make room when you are able

[Final Chorus]
I want to be good, I want to be glad
I want to give without hating what I have
I won't save the world by breaking in two
I'll keep some light for me, and carry some through

[Outro]
A coat by the door
A chair pulled near
Not perfect, not pure
But present, here
