Read The Thread

[Verse 1]
My phone won't quit
Your name and theirs
A hundred little pings
And no one there

I smile at text
Then stare at air
Surrounded by words
Still nobody near

[Pre-Chorus]
I keep the plans
I keep the pace
Late-night checkmarks
Same empty space

At twenty-four
I learned this truth
Some rooms are crowded
Still missing you

[Chorus]
Read the thread
Read the thread
Still alone in the room

Read the thread
Read the thread
But nobody comes through

I want a hand
Not just a screen
Read the thread
Read the thread
You know what I mean

[Verse 2]
At twenty-five
I'm trying hard
Coffee with names
And cards in cards

I show up clean
I stay too long
Talk about work
Pretend I'm strong

[Pre-Chorus]
They say "let's do lunch"
Then fade by dawn
Calendars fill
Then the months move on

I keep the faith
I keep the door
But close friends feel
Like they need more

[Chorus]
Read the thread
Read the thread
Still alone in the room

Read the thread
Read the thread
But nobody comes through

I want a hand
Not just a screen
Read the thread
Read the thread
You know what I mean

[Bridge]
Maybe I'm not behind
Maybe I'm just becoming
Maybe time ain't mine to waste
If I stop running

Say my name
Stay a while
Let the silence settle
Let it crack a smile

[Final Chorus]
Read the thread
Read the thread
Still alone in the room

Read the thread
Read the thread
But somebody comes through

One real call
One real thing
Read the thread
Read the thread
And let it mean something
