Spare Key

[Verse 1]
You call when the lock won’t turn
When the rain gets under your coat
I know which drawer holds the spare key
And how to steady your voice on the phone
You say, “I don’t know what I’d do”
Then your hand is already on the door

[Pre-Chorus]
I kept mistaking the weight of your trust
For the warmth of being chosen

[Chorus]
You love the shelter I make for you
The steady hands, the room to land
But when the weather clears, you’re gone again
I’m the safe place, not the one you want
You need me close when the floor gives way
Then leave me there when you can stand
I’m tired of being called your home
By someone who won’t stay

[Verse 2]
Your boxes wait beside the stairs
You ask me to carry the heavy ones
You tell me all the things you can’t tell them
Then laugh like we’re the closest friends
I memorize the little warning signs
And you never learn the shape of mine

[Pre-Chorus]
I kept mistaking your reaching hands
For hands that meant to hold me

[Chorus]
You love the shelter I make for you
The steady hands, the room to land
But when the weather clears, you’re gone again
I’m the safe place, not the one you want
You need me close when the floor gives way
Then leave me there when you can stand
I’m tired of being called your home
By someone who won’t stay

[Breakdown]
Say it plain
You trust me with the pieces
You don’t love me for the person
Who stays up gathering them
Say it plain
I was useful in the wreckage
But you never asked what it cost
To be the one you lean on

[Final Chorus]
You love the shelter I make for you
But I want more than being your plan
When every other door is closing
I want you here when you can stand
I won’t keep calling need devotion
I won’t keep lending out my hands
I’m not a room you pass through
I’m a heart you never planned

[Outro]
Take the spare key
Leave the truth
I was there for you
You were passing through
