The Next Small Step

[Verse 1]
The forecast keeps changing above the county line
Your hands are on the wheel; your knuckles mark the time
We missed the turn at Miller’s, passed the shuttered store
Still there’s a little road ahead we haven’t seen before

[Pre-Chorus]
When every answer slips away
Stay here with me; we’ll face the day

[Chorus]
Hold on, hold on, the ground can turn beneath us
Hold on, hold on, the dawn can find us here
When the farthest ridge is hidden, when the signs are hard to read
Hope is just the next small step, and you’re not taking it alone

[Verse 2]
The kitchen clock is stubborn, the kettle starts to sing
You set two chipped blue cups beside the windowpane
No grand design, no promise written in the sky
Just your shoulder close to mine, and morning drawing nigh

[Pre-Chorus]
If all we know is where we stand
That’s enough to take my hand

[Chorus]
Hold on, hold on, the ground can turn beneath us
Hold on, hold on, the dawn can find us here
When the farthest ridge is hidden, when the signs are hard to read
Hope is just the next small step, and you’re not taking it alone

[Bridge]
Maybe brave is staying till the rain lets up
Maybe faith is filling one more cup
Maybe all the light we need to see
Is the little bit you lend to me

[Final Chorus]
Hold on, hold on, the ground can turn beneath us
Hold on, hold on, the dawn can find us here
When the farthest ridge is hidden, when the signs are hard to read
Hope is just the next small step, and you’re not taking it alone

[Outro]
One more step, one more day
You and me will find a way
